Red Bull Cola Has a COCAINE Kick

Red Bull’s New Cola: A Kick from Cocaine? – TIME: “About a year ago, the makers of Red Bull, the famous caffeine-loaded energy drink, decided to come out with a soda, unsurprisingly named Red Bull Cola. The shared name implied the same big kick. But could the cola’s boost — supposedly ‘100% natural’ — come from something else? Officials in Germany worry that they’ve found the answer — cocaine. And now they have prohibited the soda’s sale in six states across the country and may recommend a nation-wide ban.”

Apparently there is 0.13 mg of cocaine per can of Red Bull Cola which isn’t a serious health threat. You’d have to drink 12,000 L of Red Bull to really hurt yourself however it’s got people spooked. Bolivians say that coca can’t hurt you either way and they’re getting a laugh from the controversy.

Of course in Bolivia and the Andes, coca culture is huge. In fact coca is part of the Andean culture and it’s not a drug if you don’t turn it into cocaine. The main issue is really a legal one – you just can’t sell the stuff outside of the Andes unless you remove the cocaine chemical.

Red Bull hasn’t really answered anyone on where they get their leaves however.

The Paradigm Shift Project is holding their first slideshow-documentary “From the Earth to the Pot: Urban Agriculture & Food Security in Lima, Peru” on Tuesday, May 26 at 7:10pm at Mountain Equipment Co-op in Toronto (400 King Street West).

The presentation includes the fantastic work of project photographer Kamil Bialous and project coordinator Andrea Maldonado. According to Kamil and Andrea, “This project opened our eyes, hearts and minds to what it’s possible to achieve in spite of the obstacles of poverty, marginalization, and a desert climate second only to Cairo.”

It is important for all of us to realize that we have to rebuild strong local food systems not just here but also abroad.” S.L.

The ailing economy is making people sicker – The Boston Globe

Ladies and gents, this is what we call a vicious circle. The economy gets worse, people lose jobs, their health suffers and this makes the economic crisis even worse. Then again the bubble’s burst, cards will fall. Eventually the economy may fix itself (though not until 2011 according to my thinking – more mortgage crises to come) though how we we deal with the lies that both Wall Street and its government buddies put in place is still up for debate.

Ultimately it is everyone who isn’t filthy, six digit figure rich who pays the price. I understand that life isn’t fair except if you allow such unfairness to go this far someone’s going to get hurt. Someone really ought to hold the unscrupulous and unethical to account – make them feel what everyone else is feeling. (Alas, I don’t believe such individuals were ever capable of doing so and governments play favourites)

It is at these times that I ask – “How much do you really need to live” – after all it takes some really extreme greed to get where we are now. A little greed people could handle. This economic crisis begs us to ask, “Are humans a bit too self destructive? Perhaps insane and psychopaths after all?” Hmm… quite the question.

Does the crisis hurts your head? A lot?

People truly underestimate and dismiss the mental health implications of stress. I’m dead serious. If the mind breaks, the body breaks. If the body breaks, the mind breaks.

Dr. Joseph Gold states:

Early in the crisis, “some people were feeling frozen or immobilized,” Gold said.

They dreaded going to the emergency room, fearful they would be socked with a bill they couldn’t pay. And if they were hospitalized, Gold said, they worried they might lose their job.

But as weeks passed, the economic deterioration deepened – and with it, patients’ despair.

“Then what we saw in December and January was the volume in the psychiatric emergency rooms and in our hospital was actually much higher than we expected,” Gold said, “which seems to confirm there was some element of people postponing their care until they could not defer it any longer.”

Are you hurting yourself?

Dr. Adelman:

“People tend to drink more when they’re stressed out,” said Adelman, director of behavioral health and addiction medicine at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, a group practice that treats about 30,000 patients for mental health conditions. “I’m seeing more people falling off the wagon who have been relatively sober for quite a while. The addiction business is booming.”

Wasn’t that obvious?

Hell, even I’m feeling the pain of this crisis in my heart. Unlike many others however, I haven’t retreated to habits which would make things worse. Still exercising, eating right and trying to stay sane.

Some sweet pear cider and wine would be nice right about now though (smirks).

The chief of outpatient medicine at Boston Medical estimates that financial turmoil figures into at least half of all patient visits, and at one of the nation’s premier psychiatric hospitals, McLean in Belmont, 31 percent more patients were admitted last month than in December 2007.

‘I’ve been stunned by how pervasive the impact of the current economic downturn is on the health of my brood,’ said Dr. Stephen Hoffmann, whose medical practice in Framingham has nearly 3,000 patients.

The economic crisis is far too fresh for any government agency or professional organization to have quantified the health consequences. But during previous recessions, researchers linked spikes in unemployment in the United States and Europe to increases in deaths from heart disease, cancer, and psychiatric disorders.

Less Means More: Organics Packs a Nutrition Punch

LESS MEANS MORE IN CARLO LEIFERT’S RESEARCH ON EUROPE’S LOW-INPUT FARMERS

The great divide between food and farming is about to become a blur as a result of pioneering scientific research in Europe that’s pushing the boundaries of health and agricultural policy.

Though no poem insists that “food is food and agriculture is agriculture, and never the twain shall meet,” that may as well be the watchword in both fields. The chasm between the two is rarely bridged at any level of public discussion or decision-making. Food writers rarely report on farms, and vice versa. Nutritionists rarely discuss anything that happens to food before it’s harvested, and vice versa for agronomists; even the champions of organic farming rarely make nutritional claims. Doctors barely know about nutrition and hospitals serve what is called hospital food, just as farmers and processors don’t fret about what happens to diabetes rates when all their corn is turned into cheap pop and junkfood filler. Government ministries and departments of food and agriculture rarely meet, let alone worry about harmonizing their policies.

I’ve long believed that the vice versas of the Two Solitudes of food and farm are responsible for most of the ills in both worlds, and so was all ears when Carlo Leifert came to speak to the annual Canadian Organic Growers (COG) conference in Toronto during February.

Leifert, a professor of ecological agriculture at Newcastle University in England, manages 31 institutes in a collaborative research project that’s revolutionizing our understanding of how humble farming methods – not just high-tech food storage, packaging and cooking methods – can boost health outcomes of food. Leifert’s team is tasked to help farmers do more with less by using low-cost methods to grow high-value food – thus the name of his project, the Quality Low Input Food Project.

The work is funded by the European Union, which hopes to shift its hundreds of billions of dollars in yearly agricultural subsidies away from encouraging high volume and toward encouraging high nutritional and environmental quality. The less is more approach applies as much to eaters as farmers; turns out that organic eats are so much more nutrient-dense that this could well become the new low-input weight-loss fad.

The shift from quantity to quality is a huge shift for Europe, where heart-wrenching memories of widespread famines during the 1930s and ’40s inspired policies that drive up food production. That obsession has held firm, even as populations began to suffer more from obesity than hunger, and as mountains of unsold food surplus, rather than shortages, kept farming in perpetual crisis. But as the research by Leifert’s team gains ground, the merging of farm, food, health and environment concerns will become the new normal. I predict this convergence if the food and health field will outshine the significance of the 1990s convergence of the media, information, computer and entertainment industries.

Leifert wastes no time getting to his findings. Organic farming methods “are the only way forward,” he begins his talk at COG. “Even in the short term, organic is the only way to achieve acceptable yields.”

Them’s fighting words for the champions of costly chemical fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, tractors and harvesters, the stock in trade of typical farmers in the Global North, often backed by more expensive capital equipment that the typical factory worker. Though many have criticized the environmental and social costs of capital-intensive methods that emptied the countryside population and polluted its ground and water, none have dared challenge the supremacy of high inputs when it comes to production of cheap and plentiful food.

Leifert, who has a PhD in microbiology, insists his views are based strictly on science, not personal preferences. Over a long lunch at the Yorkville organic restaurant, True, he lays out the objective reasons why the high-input farming methods that produced low-cost food in the recent past are fast becoming obsolete.

Chemical fertilizer made up of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) is the foundation stone of modern industrialized ag, since it let farmers specialize and grow the same crops on the same field year after year. Organic farmers, who spread their time composting and rotating many crops of veggies, grains, animals and green manures, couldn’t compete on labor time or price.

The N in NPK is the headline act in conventional ag because it’s the chemical elixir that gives plants energy, albeit at a cost of spewing out 2.38 tons of global warming gases for every ton of fossil fuel-based nitrogen – not exactly a high environmental quality.

But the sleeper when it comes to resources and productivity is the P for mined phosphorus, which Leifert calls “the bottleneck” or “limiting factor” of plant production, since no other chemical has an impact without phosphorus. With about 30 years supply left in the world, mostly in Africa and Canada, the cost of phosphorus imports alone is already so expensive that it is starting to drive European conventional food prices to the level of organic, he says.

The organic fertility strategy, which relies on recycling crop and animals wastes instead of purchasing them from off-farm, can survive the resource crunch, Leifert argues. But the trump card is nutritional quality.

It turns out that synthetic fertilizers produced quantity at the expense of quality, for the simple reason that artificial nitrogen encouraged plants to grow fast to compete for light, thereby prioritizing starch relative to complex nutrients. Pesticides also discouraged plant production of nutrients, which may have evolved to protect plants from pests, he says.

When it comes to meat and milk, the organic leg up is even more dramatic. There is more protein, more Vitamin E, more lutein, more caretenoids and more omega 3 fats in food coming from animals wandering outdoors to chew on fresh pasture, Leifert’s research team has proven — much better than the results from animals fattened fast inside a barn on stored grains. That makes for a healthy difference in cancer, heart disease, diabetes, some child allergies and even e-coli incidents, he says, and a significant reduction in medical costs. As well, a person gets the same nutrients from 10 to 20 per cent less calories, Leifert says. “If obesity is a major problem, then that’s a benefit.”

He’s the first to admit his findings aren’t based on rocket science. Exhaustive research covering differences in northern and southern European farms, in winter and summer, in barns and out in the fresh air, proves “we have to give cows grass,” he says. “We could have told you that before.”

Indeed, Sir Albert Howard, one of the pioneers of organic farming in the 1940s, based his arguments on organic farming’s yeoman service to health exclusively on the superiority of fields composted with manure and crop wastes. This fertility “is the basis of the public health system of the future,” Howard wrote during the 1940s, and can reverse the “famine of quality” resulting from “vast supplies of bastard nitrogen” left over from war industries. Only the fragmentation into distinct specialties could prevent public awareness of these benefits, Howard warned: “the plague of so-called experts” who have specialized to point where they learn “more and more about less and less.”

That plague may now be coming to an end. Individuals who buy organic food can now expect to get more nutrients for their money, and public health likewise depends on higher cost food that leads to lower cost medicine – a smart and humane trade-off since food-based disease prevention is always cheaper and happier than medical cures.

EPA Doesn’t Care What You Drink

EPA Makes No Rule On Chemical in Water – washingtonpost.com: “The Environmental Protection Agency formally refused yesterday to set a drinking-water safety standard for perchlorate, a chemical in rocket fuel that has been linked to thyroid problems in pregnant women, newborns and young children.”

The Environmental Protection Agency was certainly not working in the public’s best interest. They definitely weren’t looking out for your kids. Rocket fuel – that’s something the military uses and it’s produced by big chemical businesses of course. Since Bush was in office at the time (and being all for business and only business), the EPA was likely told to not change the standard. Go figure.

Here’s what’s truly scary:

In the document released yesterday, the EPA assumes that the maximum safe perchlorate contamination level is 15 times higher than what the agency suggested in 2002.

By that standard, the EPA estimates that more than 16 million Americans are exposed to the chemical at a level that is unsafe.

Wow. Like WOW. That’s 5% of the US population. How many of those people are people of colour, poor, low income, vulnerable? Or live in bad neighbourhoods right outside these chemical factories? Is this more environmental injustice?

And when was the last time the EPA really conducted some serious research into a really acceptable level for perchlorate? EPA if you’re reading this please comment!

Blasted by a Senator

Even one of the senators on the Environment and Public Works committee blasted the EPA for its ruling:

“The Bush EPA’s failure to set a standard for perchlorate, a dangerous contaminant found in drinking water, is outrageous, and I will do everything in my power to reverse it. Perchlorate contamination endangers the health of our families, especially pregnant women and children, and to simply allow it to remain in our drinking water is immoral.”

Right on. We’ve already got tons of over the counter drugs and worse in our drinking water. Lets work to clean it up shall we?

Different Boss?

Now that Obama is in office things may change. May. The industry is powerful and people need to keep pressuring government and business to get ethical. It has to be top down and bottom up.

Right on. Nous avons déjà reçu des tonnes de plus de la

Church goers support torture!?!

A recent survey on CNN indicates that more than 50% of people who go to church once a week are more likely to support torture against suspected terrorists. Unfortunately the survey is small and is restricted only to “white evangelicals, white non-Hispanic Catholics, white mainline Protestants and the religiously unaffiliated.”

Still one could argue that people who are tightly linked to religion are more protective of their community. They may believe that torture is justified if it protects their community. These church goers may have a strong sense that community protection trumps individual rights of “suspected” terrorists. People without strong religious links may not have that level of protectionism.

So how far would you go to protect your “tribe”?

Survey: Support for terror suspect torture differs among the faithful – CNN.com: “More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is ‘often’ or ’sometimes’ justified. Only 42 percent of people who ’seldom or never’ go to services agreed, according to the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.”

The Real Deal: Who Created Swine Flu…

Fingers are pointing to our current system of agriculture for the outbreak of swine flu (H1N1). When you decide to cram a lot of pigs together you’re creating a perfect place for disease to grow and thrive. In particular, some fingers are pointing towards a massive pig farm run by Smithfield Corporation.

Think of it like dirty dishes. If you cram them in your sink with leftovers and leave it there for awhile it’s going to have a lot of mold in no time. Now think of the pig “poo” lagoons that get created (thousands of pigs, no washroom and one big hole). There so terrible that they have to be covered up and left there – it just doesn’t go away (just like dirty dishes after several months).

“No-one yet knows whether swine flu will become a global pandemic, but it is becoming clear where it came from – most likely a giant pig factory farm run by an American multinational corporation in Veracruz, Mexico.(1)

These factory farms are disgusting and dangerous, and they’re rapidly multiplying. Thousands of pigs are brutally crammed into dirty warehouses and sprayed with a cocktail of drugs — posing a health risk to more than just our food — they and their manure lagoons create the perfect conditions to breed dangerous new viruses like swine flu. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) must investigate and develop regulations for these farms to protect global health.”

Of course these ponds are far worse than dirty dishes because they can leak into lakes, rivers and drinking water. In fact:

Smithfield itself has already been fined $12.6m and is currently under another federal investigation in the US for toxic environmental damage from pig excrement lakes.(5)

People we need to clean up the way we grow food because in the end it’s going to come back to bite us in the back side. Kind of the way a mountain of dirty dishes, flies and nasty bugs does.

Last week the flu was all that we talked about — Mexico has been nearly paralysed and across the world leaders halted air travel, banned pork imports and initiated drastic controls to mitigate the spreading virus. As the threat shows signs of subsiding the question becomes where it came from and how we stop another outbreak.

Smithfield Corporation, the largest pig producer in the world whose farm is being fingered as the source of the H1N1 outbreak, denies any connection between their pigs and the flu and big agrobusiness worldwide pays huge sums of money for research to argue that biosafety is ensured in industrial hog production. But the WHO has been saying for years that ‘a new pandemic is inevitable’(2) and experts from the European Commission and the FAO have cautioned that the rapid move from small holdings to industrial pig production is in fact increasing the risk of development and transmission of disease epidemics. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that scientists still do not know the extent that infectious compounds produced in factory farms affect human health.(3)

Studies abound of the horrific conditions endured by pigs in concentrated large-scale operations, and the devastating economic impact on small farmer communities of bloated large-scale operations.(4) Smithfield itself has already been fined $12.6m and is currently under another federal investigation in the US for toxic environmental damage from pig excrement lakes.(5)

But even with all of this damaging evidence, a combination of increased global meat consumption and a powerful industry motivated by profit at the cost of human health, means that instead of being shut down – these sickening factory farm operations are propagating around the world and we are subsidising them (6). If we resolve this global health crisis boldly by reassessing our food consumption and production, and urgently calling for an inquiry into the impact of factory farms on human health, we could put in place tough farm practice rules that will save the global population from future animal borne lethal pandemics.

Press Releases September 2008 – Landmark New Report Says Emerging Green Economy Could Create Tens of Millions of New “Green Jobs” – United Nations Environment Programme: “The new report entitled Green Jobs: Towards Decent work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World, says changing patterns of employment and investment resulting from efforts to reduce climate change and its effects are already generating new jobs in many sectors and economies, and could create millions more in both developed and developing countries.

However, the report also finds that the process of climate change, already underway, will continue to have negative effects on workers and their families, especially those whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and tourism. Action to tackle climate change as well as to cope with its effects is therefore urgent and should be designed to generate decent jobs.”
